Malina is a French U.S-based screenwriter and producer who co-created and wrote many critically acclaimed TV series like "Zodiaque," "Le Maitre du Zodiaque," "Mystère," and "Jo." in both French and English.

Originally from Bulgaria, Malina started writing at a young age. She published several poems and short stories as a teen.

Malina has written for international actors such as Jean Reno, Francis Huster, Jill Hennessy, Claire Keim, Guillaume Depardieu, Tom Austen, Claudia Cardinale, and others. 

Her recent thriller for TF1 "Loin de Chez Moi" (Far From Home) aired in October 2021, which TV Magazine praised as "un thriller implacable!" (an addictive thriller).

Now, Malina is continuing her work for the screen and has started taking her stories to the stage as well.

BIOGRAPHY

Frequently noted for her ability to create unforgettable characters enmeshed in great dramatic suspense, French writer, director, and producer, Malina Detcheva-Rossa, is perhaps best known for her work on a number of award-winning French TV productions which include several series for the French Channel TF1: Zodiac, Le Maître du Zodiac, and Mystère. Malina also co-created and wrote the TV series, Jo, starring French actor Jean Reno. The series quickly found an international audience, airing in more than one hundred countries.

 

Malina is a graduate of the European Foundation of Cinema (la FEMIS), Paris, France. As a young filmmaker, she wrote and created two documentaries (Roufinka Ballad and Dermantzi) recounting the story of her family under communism in Bulgaria. Selected in numerous festivals, both documentaries have aired widely with many showings on the French public channel Antenne 2 and the European channel ARTE. 

Malina is a Prix de Rome laureate. She was a filmmaker in residence at the Villa Medici, Rome, Italy (1992). Her script, According to the Flesh, is an Emergence winner - the French equivalent of Sundance - (1998). 

Malina splits her time between Los Angeles and New York where her twins, Esther and Dylan, live as recent Columbia University graduates.

Prix de Rome Winner

Malina wrote an adaptation of Saint Augustin’s “Confessions” for which she received the coveted Prix de Rome and was granted a one-year residency in the prestigious Villa Medici in Rome. During her time there, she worked on her documentaries, which were featured on European networks in the following years. She was mentored by French Academy Award honoree screenwriter Jean Claude Carriere.

Selected for the Emergence Director's Lab

Malina’s screenplay titled “According to the Flesh” was selected in the Emergence Director’s Lab more commonly known as the French Sundance Festival, where she was given funds and mentorship under Academy Award winner Gerard Depardieu to produce highlight scenes from her script. She had the opportunity to direct world renowned French actors Claudia Cardinale, Guillaume Depardieu, Marie Gillain, and Matthieu Demi.

Selected for the World Poetry Anthology

Her poem, “Archeology of the Future”, that she wrote as a teenager, was published in a nationwide Bulgarian literary magazine and was printed in the World Anthology of Poetry.
